WHAT FEEDS GROWTH
Mould needs more than moisture.
Risk is a stack of factors. The more of them a home has, the faster growth establishes; remove any one and you slow everything down.
Humidity in the growth band. Sustained indoor humidity in the high 60s and above is the engine of growth. Holding 30 to 50 percent stalls most moulds.
Still air and poor ventilation. Stagnant corners hold moist air against cold surfaces. Cross-flow ventilation and exhaust fans deny mould the still conditions it prefers.
Dust as a food source. Mould eats what settles: dust, skin cells, fibres and soap residue. Regular cleaning removes the meal, not just the appearance.
Too little sunlight and UV. Direct sun is a free anti-mould treatment: UV damages spores and warmth dries surfaces. Rooms that never see the sun stay colder, damper and darker, which is why shaded walls and built-in wardrobes are classic trouble spots.
